The Story of Tani

"Tiny" was actually called "Tani", which was short for Valentina Peracchi, who was born in Spring of 1919 and died on Christmas Eve of the same year from bronchial pneumonia. This picture was taken in late summer of 1919 in front of the Peracchi home on E Street. According to Grandma, a man with a goat and cart was in the neighborhood taking pictures for five cents! Valentina was named after Zia, whose real name was Valentina Collebrizzi who was Celeste Peracchi’s sister-in law (married to Zio (Joe Collebrizzi). Zia came to Fresno from Strawn Texas in early 1919, while Celeste was pregnant with Baby Tani. Nonna named the baby after her. Valentina’s untimely death occured on Christmas Eve, which was a Christmas that grandma would never forget. Grandma was 12 years old at the time. At 3:00 a.m. early Christmas morning, Nonna (Grandma’s mother Celeste) woke up and said, La mia bambina e ancora viva!, La mia bambina e ancora viva! (My baby daughter is still alive!
My baby daughter is still alive! So, as Grandma told the story in her words, " Mamma took me by the hand and said, ‘We must go get Valentina!
She is alive’. So I walked with mamma for four blocks on a cold dark foggy night, scared to death!. We arrived at the Nuttman Funeral Home, and walked in to find Valentina". At that moment, I asked Grandma, "So, what happened?" And Grandma replied, "She was still dead!!!!"
